The Istanbul Type Conference (ISType) returns with its ninth edition on November 2nd. This year’s event will focus on the graphic applications of type—both static and dynamic. The series continues its exploration of various aspects of typography, type design, and the diverse scripts central to typographic content. The theme for the 9th ISType conference is “Text-ure.” Nine designers will delve into the textural qualities of typography, type design, and their graphic applications. The conference will explore designing and using typefaces, both static and dynamic, and across the full range of micro and macro typographic scales.
The program will begin with Tobias Frere-Jones sharing insights from his personal journey in type design. Ulrike Rausch will then delve into the realm of crafting and programming handwriting fonts. Marc Schütz will focus on the creative aspects of digital toolmaking for his studio’s design tasks. Astrid Stavro will explore both the well-known and lesser-known qualities of type as an image. Eben Sorkin will guide us through the meticulous process of designing type for various dimensions, both macro and micro. Yara Khoury will explore the visual imprint of Arabic typography through letter frequency analysis. Albert Jan Pool will reveal some stories about how his encounter with the lettering models of DIN 1451 led him to surprising discoveries. Kostas Bartsokas will invite the audience to dive into the textural qualities of type-making from various scripts and highlight how one can retain creative expression without compromising balance. Last but not least, Liza Enebeis will take us on a journey exploring the performance of typographic textures in sound and motion. Following the full-day conference, there will be a hands-on type design workshop on the following day, November 3rd, led by Georg Stiefert, the creator of the Glyphs app.
The conference will be held at the Salt Galata auditorium, located in the heart of Istanbul. For more information and ticket purchases visit ISType 2024 texture site.
